Installing Windows Server 2008 via Virtual Media?
Jun 24 2008, 2:25 PM EDT
I've got a new server (PowerEdge 2950) at a remote location that I'm trying to install Windows Server 2008 (Std, x64) on. I've copied the Windows Server ISO to another machine at that location. I'm then using Terminal Services to connect to this intermediate machine to try to run a console session via the DRAC to the new machine. I am able to mount the ISO image as a virtual CD-ROM, but keep getting messages during the install about needing drivers for a CD/DVD Device which I can't seem to get past.
I've tried using an ISO of the Dell Server Update Utility to make sure the RAC, Server, and BMC firmware is all up to date to no avail I've also tried to go through the Dell Build and Update utility process to do the assisted installation. That works just fine until it asks me to mount the WS08 media at which time it complains about it being invalid.
So does anyone know if Is it possible to install Server 2008 solely through the use of the virtual media features in the DRAC?

Yes, should work fine - There's an article in PowerSolutions Magazine the briefly discusses it -- http://www.dell.com/downloads/global/power/ps2q08-20070572-Zhang.pdf

We'll see about getting the author of that article to chime in. Are all the bios/firmware/drivers up to date ? And this is standard licensed WS08 Media ?

First I would check to make sure that the media (ISO image) is a supported one (either 32 bit version or AMD64 bit version. Not IA x64 version.)

For the Build and Update Utility assisted install, make sure the ISO image is mounted because the system booted to WinPE. If the iso image is mounted after the system is booted, the WinPE would not recognized the media.

The BIOS and firmware are all up to date and this is standard licensed WS08 media.
I had in fact seen that article. But being lazy I was hoping to avoid having to create a custom image for deployment since I'm only going to need to do this for 5 or 6 boxes. If I take that same ISO and burn it to physical DVD it installs just fine. That's what makes me think its something specific to the virtual CD. That being the case, I'm not even sure what driver I'd need to inject into the image to make it work with the virtual CD.

Was this ever figured out? I'm attempting to do the same thing, and get prompted for Device Driver. browsed all over the server C Drive and could not find one. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

After spending 2 hrs on the phone with Dell, we have figured out the issue. You need to remove all Objects in IE, then log back into DRAC and install the plug-ins. Worked like a charm after that. Do you find this valuable?

Marc, thanks for coming back and posting your findings, helps us all out. Which exact settings in IE do I navigate to "remove all Objects"? Do you find this valuable?

IE/Tools/Internet Options/"Browsing History" Settings/View Objects. I just deleted them all. Logged back into DRAC, installed plugins for Console and Virtual Media. It would probably help to install the latest DRAC 5 Firmware too.
