OpenManage 5.4 - Cisco Switches
May 1 2008, 3:11 AM EDT
Hi Guys,

I would like to use OpenManage as my central snmp trap server for my network devices (all cisco). I can get the snmp community strings working fine (I can click on Device Details in OM and see all the switch ports) but I would to do more.... like getting alll th switches to show under a group (instead on Unknown)... I have had a look on the Dell forums but there is no information of note...

Am i barking up the wrong tree here? or is is posible to use OM in this way?

Thanks heaps,
Stuart.

I'm by no means an expert in this area, but might be able to point you down a path we can stumble through together. Most likely you will need to import the MIBs for the Cisco devices into ITA so it knows what they are.

I'm going to be doing this today for an HP system I'm testing in the lab related to this article -- http://www.delltechcenter.com/page/Managing+non-Dell+Servers+with+ITA

Look at the first reference PDF on that page, and it might be enough to get you started.

As you can see on the page, I'm at the same point as you. I've got the HP system in ITA, and I can see some detail, but it shows up as a gray question mark because ITA doesn't really know what it is yet.

I think the answer can be found in the following link... scroll to the bottom and read the "Event Source Import Utility" information.

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/software/smitasst/8.0.1/en/ug/itaugab.htm#1054785

The problem here is that people are required to create their own .txt file (room for error/confusion here) which can then be imported into OM... But i also read that Openmanage doesn’t support snmp version 2 traps... which adds to the confusion.

We are in agreement with the problem of creating your own txt files. Too much room for error. I'm evaluating several ways to attempt a conversion of the MIB files into a TXT file for use with the Event Source Import Utility.

I'm working on the HP MIBs right now, and once I get something working I can crack open the Cisco MIBs and see if the format is similar in the source file. Then maybe the same script/tool I write will work, or can easily be modified.

Thanks, I will be waiting for this much needed initiative.
By the way, same as for IBM Servers.
We need a documented way to have HP and IBM Servers/Storage integrated into ITA.
